Removing a book from a shelf
Small tears along the tops of dust jackets, and stretching of the spine of the
book can be caused by pulling books from the shelf by the top of the spine.
The best way to remove a book from a shelf is to either grip it from the sides if
space allows, or reach over the top of the book and pull it towards you.

Forcing a book open can damage the spine. The best method for handling a
book while reading is to hold it open just enough to read comfortable, and not
